about

Written and demoed in 1991, in the tortured aftermath of an infatuation that could have become something more but didn't, largely because of my own nerves. I now view this song as way too melodramatically morose, but there's no doubt I truly felt it at the time. And the melody and chords are still nice. Once again, me on voice and guitars, Jonno Deily on everything else.

lyrics

I’ve lost everything
I’ve lost everything
I know I can’t lose any more

I remember how it felt when I gave up
As soon as she appeared, I’d dive beneath
The floorboards, see all my words fall from me

I’ve lost everything
I’ve lost everything
I know I can’t lose any more

I never could have been honest with her, only playful
So why am I still disappointed
So why does my heart feel so damaged

One day I’ll stop looking for her in a crowd—maybe
I’ll tell myself she’s not there and be satisfied
I know that brooding is a disease
But I’m not that eager to be cured

Every song I sing is for you, don’t forget that
I’ve been living your life vicariously
And I don’t want to go back to my own just yet

So I’ve exorcised the ghost for a while—now what
You’ve taken on a new form just for fun
Feel like I was under examination
And the results are about to come through
Which way do I run

I’ve lost everything
