On the Line 03:20
What’s the point after all of the written word? It only reaches where we dare Stretch it out and twist it around You won’t show, I can’t speak You won’t hear me on the line On the line Features change in the haze of memory But what about your true face? The lights are moving faster Shining down on my hiding place There’s no doubt this luxury is mine On the line You made your point, but it soon was lost in the wind And left alone behind the screen door If you like, you can hang me out to dry But you can’t take me off the line Off the line Words and music by Mac Randall © 1994, 2016 Grandiosity Complex Ltd. At an End 05:59
At one end there lies another The ends multiply, like jilted lovers “Don’t leave us here,” they say, “please linger” But the bee has lost its stinger It spirals down with useless wings A life that’s fair, there aren’t such things The only recourse as time extends Is to stand and face our many ends (Write the words) One after another Do they follow? What is following? As the pickings get slimmer, we all grow grimmer But I was always grim In the theater of our middle age We wait for a sign summoning us to the stage The sign never comes, though the light descends Leaving us all at the loosest of ends Words and music by Mac Randall © 2016 Grandiosity Complex Ltd. He rode off the rails just to show his worth Left for a moment, gone for good on return A truth expressed in the palm of his hand I tell you now this will not stand for long Ten years in charge, but of what he’s not sure So many times he’s almost walked out the door But the lure of security wins every time Even though he knows his mind is owned By another Follow the signs, follow the signs, follow Will you ever see them? Do you get the sequence? Then follow Even though he knows his mind is owned By another Follow the signs, follow the signs, follow Will you ever see them? Can you learn to Follow the signs, follow the signs, follow Follow the signs Will you follow? Words and music by Mac Randall © 1998, 2016 Grandiosity Complex Ltd. (ASCAP)

Category 10:14
Flashing ambulance lights Reflected on the metal Sliding up and down the metal The cold, hard metal The blade was finally put to use Lies there on the pavement In the gutter by the corner The cold, hard pavement There’ll have to be a new category To divide experiences Say what you will, it'll never do Wave goodbye to your friends on the boat Blow the horn in the car to be sure Out on the open sea, how estranged we can be This may be the last time, you might not be happy Anymore, anymore, anymore There’ll have to be a new category To divide experiences There’ll have to be a new category That’s what they’re telling me Wave goodbye for the last time You can’t live your own life anymore No more, no more (Wave goodbye to your friends on the boat) They want, they want To divide everything Don’t you let them do it Words and music by Mac Randall © 1988, 2016 Grandiosity Complex Ltd. about

From seed to full-grown plant. From short chord sequence or melodic fragment to finished recording. For three out of the four songs gathered here, the germination process was epic: 18 years for "Follow the Signs," 22 years for "On the Line," 28 years for "Category." They all date back to the time when I was compulsively recording demos on my TASCAM Porta One four-track cassette machine, hours and hours of music that only a handful of people ever heard. There I am caught in mid-project on the front cover, probably 20 years old, preparing to lay down yet another vocal in my bedroom at 22 Concord Ave. in Cambridge. I still have a great fondness for a lot of what I came up with back then, and these three songs in particular kept re-entering my head over the years. The time never seemed right to fully commit to them, though. Yes, I liked them, but were they really...you know...good? Finally I decided I couldn't worry about that anymore. It was time to revisit them, revise them where necessary, and let the world decide. Add one more number, "At an End," a relative whippersnapper that took only three years to complete, and you have Germination. I hope you feel it was worth the wait.
